Family Contra Dance - Saturday, April 16th, 2016 The next family Contra Dance in Guinda will be on Saturday April 16th, 2016. The dance is sponsored by the Western Yolo Grange and will be in the historic Guinda Grange Hall. Caller extraordinaire Erik Hoffman will be accompanied by the amazing local band Driving with Fergus.
What is Contra Dancing? Contra Dancing is a form of American folk dance popular in the 1800s, in which the dancers form a set of two parallel lines which run the length of the hall. It is similar to square dancing, but not limited to 4 partners in a set. Each dance is taught by the caller before it is danced, and is prompted as needed during the dance. Beginners are welcome and you don’t need to come with a partner as dancers are encouraged to dance with many different partners throughout the evening. The dances have a relaxed, family-like atmosphere and are FUN! Dress is informal, and comfortable shoes are recommended. The live music consists of traditional jigs, reels, and hornpipes from the Scots-Irish tradition, with fiddle often as the lead instrument. Admission is charged to pay for the caller, musicians, and to help fund hall restoration. Location: Guinda Grange Hall, 16787 Forest Ave, Guinda CA 95637 Date: Saturday April 16th, 2016 Time: Lesson 6:30 pm, Dance 7:00 pm-10:00 pm Cost: $10 adult, $5 youth (age 5-18) Refreshments will be available (donations appreciated) Questions?
